Pending Delete Cycle & Domain Name Status Codes Explained

What is Pending Delete Cycle ?

Pending delete cycle is a stage when the expiration of the domain occurs, and in this period the domain cannot restored, renewed or modified. This period occurs after Redemption grace period.

Pending delete is set by the registry. If there are registrar requests to update a domain or to change it, it will be automatically rejected in the pending delete status.

There is a specific period for the pending delete period, which is five days. When placed in the pending delete status, the domain name is entirely removed from the registry database within a specified number of calendar days.

In the pending delete period, the domain cannot be recovered or renewed by the past owner. Once the five days available for registration of the domain is gone, the domain is available publicly.

It is available at the registrar's when the pending delete period completes, and the domain is released.

Pending Delete Cycle

There are many misconceptions regarding the expiration of the domain. Some people think that the domain may expire at the very moment, but the reality is that if the domain does not restore or renew, it goes through 75 days.

The domain name goes into the expired domain status if the domain's owner doesn't renew the name at the renewal date. It will go into a grace period, which is of 40 days; the domains DNS are locked. Until it is renewed, it won’t work.

What is Redemption period ?

After the grace period gets over, the status of the domain gets into a redemption period of 30 days. If the original owner wants to keep, then the additional cost would be incurred for registration and activation.

What is Locked status?

After the redemption period, there is locked status, after which the deletion period starts. The duration of the deletion period is five days, but during the last day of this period, the domain name will be removed after this; the registration can be done with that domain name by anyone.

Domain Name Status Codes Explained :

1. What is Status code Active?

When the status is set active, the modification of the domain can be done by the registrar.

2. What is Registry Lock?

The registry sets the status. If the status is registry lock, then it cannot be deleted or modified in any way. The domain name can only be renewed and used.

3. What is Registry hold ?

When the status is set to registry hold, the domain cannot be changed nor deleted. The registry-hold status has to be removed by the registry. And after that, it can be renewed, but it will not be kept in the zone.

4. What is Registrar lock?

The deletion or changing of the domain cannot be done as it locked by the registrar. If the domain has to be modified, the status of the registrar lock has to be changed, only after that, it can be renewed and can be added in the zone.

5. What is Registrar hold?

Registrar hold means the registrar like ( Godaddy, Dynadot, etc.) has placed it on hold. If you want to modify the domain settings, the registrar hold status has to be removed.

But after removing the registrar hold status, it can be renewed, and then it can be involved in the zone.

6. What is Redemption period?

Redemption period comes after the grace days are over. Redemption period is off another 30 days; during these 30 days, you need to renew the domain name.

But extra charges may depend upon your registrar (i.e., GoDaddy, Namesilo, Dynadot, etc.). Additional charges may apply depending on your domain name TLD.

Also, the redemption period is not the same for every TLD’S. If you cannot renew your domain name, contact your registrar immediately.

7. What is domain Restoration period ?

If you don’t renew the domain within the grace period, then the domain gets deleted, and the registrar doesn’t have the control of the domain.

However, if you want the domain, then the registrar requests a domain restoration. For the restoration to be done, the registrar has to give proper documentation for it, only after that, the restoration can be done.

The restoration can be done correctly in time if the documentation is completed within seven days. Restoration price is much higher than renewal, and it comes with a 1-year renewal.

8. What is Deletion period?

After the redemption period of 30 days, If the domain is not renewed within the redemption period, it will go in the deletion period.

After the deletion period, the domain will no longer be available for redemption. The domain name will be deleted from the registry database after 5 days.

9. What is Final registration?

After the specific period of the pending delete period, the name will be removed from the registry. In this situation, the domain is available for the general public.
